Inland
Empire Community Newspapers, or IECN, represents the
overall marketing name of four community newspapers: El
Chicano, Colton Courier, Rialto Record and The Inland
Empire Weekly. Since advertisers are able to make one
purchase and have the benefits of circulation in all
four paper coverage areas, it became necessary to
create one name that represented all the newspapers.
IECN was thus established in 1992 and has been in use
ever since.
The newspapers of Inland Empire Community Newspaper
cover the cities of San Bernardino, Colton, Rialto,
Grand Terrace, Loma Linda, Redlands and Highland,
California.
With El Chicano newspaper, the oldest Chicano
(Hispanic, Latino, Mexican and now, of course, Latin
American) newspaper in the Inland Empire, the issues of
the Chicano community are not forgotten by the other
major media serving the community. When El Chicano
owners purchased the Colton Courier and Rialto Record
in 1987, the second Chicano/Hispanic-owned chain of
newspapers was created. The first was in Los Angeles.
El Chicano's coverage area is the City of San
Bernardino, California, but includes news of the
Hispanic/Chicano/Latino communities throughout Southern
California.
The Colton Courier covers news in Colton, California
and is one of California's oldest newspapers. It goes
back to the days of The Earps, Wyatt and Virgil, when
Virgil was town Marshall. The Courier started in 1878
which predates the Main County Daily.
The Rialto Record covers news in the City of Rialto,
California. It was originally a newspaper for the
citrus industry.
In 2005, The Inland Empire Weekly was launched to cover
the communities of Loma Linda, Redlands and Highland,
California.
The content within "IECN Sections" pertains to news
items from all of IECN's coverage areas, including the
county of San Bernardino.
